HONK IF YOU'RE HONDURAN!
Melissa (Ware) Dodson and her husband, Bart, were quickly introduced to the intricacies of Honduran public transportation when they moved to Tegucigualpa in September of last year. They had trained for weeks by immersing themselves in the new language, but hadn't realized they would have to know both Spanish and Honking. Rather than being considered rude or impatient as it here in the States, honking is normal, expected, and many times necessary to get somewhere safely. Their best interpretation of honking is
"beep" - "I'm right here, just lettin' ya know."
"beep-beep"- "Let me in, please," or "Thank you"
'BEEP!' - "Go already!" or "Watch it, Buddy!"
'BEEEEEEEEEEEP' - "Why in the world is nobody moving right now? I don't know, but I'm going to honk until we start moving."
Learning to accept new languages is a huge part of their new culture, but ministering to the older orphans at Jovenes en Camino orphanage is the highlight of their lives. Both Melissa and Bart had great jobs in Norman, a lovely older home that they were renovating, and a church they loved. However, they both agreed that they felt spiritually unfulfilled and decided to seek God for direction in their lives. Since being called to their Honduran ministry, they have grown accustomed to poverty, lack of everyday comforts and conveniences (like a car or a trip to Starbucks), and cultural differences. However, Melissa writes that they have come to appreciate the Honduran people and their humble countenance, grateful spirit, and unwavering trust in their one and only God. Bart and Melissa have begun to establish a wonderful legacy in God's glorious Kingdom!
