Second Grade Curriculum

ELEMENTARY CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

Our elementary courses are the framework on which we build a strong academic program. Our foundation is Christ-centered and biblically-based. The academic program at OCS exists for the purpose of affecting lives for the Kingdom of God. Our passion is to be found faithful in all aspects of education.

Second Grade

Second grade students develop fluency and expression as they become more independent readers. They continue building the use of phonics and word-attack skills. Reading comprehension and basic understanding of literary genres are explored in directed reading groups. Students enjoy fun and expressive oral book reports giving them valuable public speaking confidence. It is also during the second grade year that students apply the Four Square writing techniques, and writing is continued across the curriculum. Mathematical skills are expanded with focus on larger number operations and more advanced number concepts. Intentional daily Bible study provides students guidance in the application of God’s principles for daily living. Enrichment classes provide developmentally appropriate instruction in art, vocal music, technology, and physical education.
