ELEMENTARY CURRICULUM OVERVIEW
Our elementary courses are the framework on which we build a strong academic program. Our foundation is Christ-centered and biblically-based. The academic program at OCS exists for the purpose of affecting lives for the Kingdom of God. Our passion is to be found faithful in all aspects of education.
Fourth Grade
Fourth grade emphasizes writing more developed paragraphs and stories building upon an increased understanding of grammar and sentence structure. Throughout the year, we are exposed to many forms of literature, including short stories, novels, and poetry as we gain a greater appreciation for various genres. Perhaps our favorite literature unit is The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe where our classrooms and hallways are transformed into Narnia. Our study of American history and geography takes us from the early explorers to statehood using creative hands-on units such as Colonial Days and Westward Expansion. In Bible, we connect the salvation story from Genesis through Revelation with an emphasis on the personal disciplines of Bible study, scripture memory, and living out our faith in every area of our lives. Mathematical skills increase in areas such as number sense, operations, measurement, geometry, algebra, data analysis, probability and mathematical reasoning. Our science program promotes scientific literacy and encourage exploration of God’s creation. Using the scientific method, students study insects, plants, forces and machines, electricity and magnetism, phases of the moon, weathering and erosion, earth’s resources, bones and muscles, and digestion. Biblical integration is readily seen in every subject area. Enrichment classes consist of art, vocal music, technology, and physical education.
