Elementary Drop-Off & Pick-Up Procedures

DROP-OFF AND PICK-UP PROCEDURES OVERVIEW

EARLY MORNING CARE

Elementary students arriving prior to 7:50 a.m. will go to the Upper Elementary Building.  They may arrive any time after 7:30 am.  Most mornings, students will be seated in the auditorium.  On the mornings the auditorium is being used for other activities, students will be directed to another room within the Upper Elementary Building.

The early morning supervision is for elementary students requiring early morning care.  This care is intended to assist the working parent who must drop off their children prior to 7:50 a.m. because of their workday hours.  This care is not intended for the parent who wishes to avoid the carpool line or for the child who wants to come to school early to visit with friends.   In order to provide a safe adult to child ratio, please respect the intent of this service. Please note:  adult supervision will NOT be available until 7:30 a.m.  Please assist us in ensuring students are properly supervised and do not leave children before 7:30 a.m.

DROP-OFF/EARLY MORNING PROCEDURES

(morning drop-off map

For the safety of all OCS students, please adhere to the policies set forth.  Traffic patterns have been carefully considered and are based upon many factors, specifically the safety of our students.

We have TWO drop-off points.  Generally speaking, parents should choose the route that places their child closest to their classroom.

Drop Off Point – Along Curb of Lower Elementary Building and Upper Elementary Building

One of the drop-off points is along the curb leading into Upper Elementary Building and the bottom floor of our Lower Elementary Building.  This drop-off point is most convenient for our PreK and kindergarten students and for our fourth and fifth grade students.

The entrance for this drop of point is from 2nd street.

IMPORTANT TO NOTE:  To expedite the arrival process and prevent unnecessary tardies, SEVERAL CARS SHOULD UNLOAD AT ONE TIME – STUDENTS CAN WALK ALONG THE SIDEWALK UNTIL THEY REACH THE GATED ENTRANCE BETWEEN THE BUILDINGS.  Students should exit their cars on the side near the curb.  Students should be ready to exit as their car approaches the curb/drop-off.  If young children are not able to exit their car on their own, parents should park in the area near the prayer chapel and walk their child to the sidewalk.  Parents who use the drop-off line, but get out of their car to help their children exit, delay the drop-off process.

Drop Off Point – Along Curb near the Life Church Prayer Chapel

Students in the 1st – 3rd grade students will enter from the I35 frontage road (near the big cross).  Follow the carpool map until students are near the Prayer Chapel.  Please pull forward as far as possible in order to unload six or more cars at a time.  Someone from our elementary staff will be on duty to assist with traffic flow and the safe arrival of students.   Students should unload on the passenger side of the vehicle, placing students near the curb.  Students should be ready to unload when their car reaches the drop-off point.

Families or carpools who have children in both carpools may choose which drop-off point is most convenient.  Until the PreK and K students become familiar with our campus, most families will probably feel more comfortable utilizing the entrance from 2nd Street, as this is closer to the classrooms of the youngest students.

ARRIVING AFTER 8:00 am

ALL elementary students arriving after the 8:00 a.m. start should be dropped off in front of the Upper Elementary Building.  Students will enter the elementary office and obtain a tardy slip.  If a child is arriving after 8:05 a.m., parents should park and walk their child into the elementary school office to sign them in for the day.

AFTERNOON PICKUP PROCEDURES

(afternoon pick-up map)

To maximize our instructional day, teachers will not lead their class out of the building for outside pickup until 3:00 p.m.  Parents who arrive in our parking lot at 3:00 p.m. or even 3:05 p.m. - 3:10 p.m. will be able to retrieve their children in a timely manner and will assist us all in diminishing traffic problems.  Plus, parents will avoid the frustration of waiting in line.  This works best.  Many drivers feel it is necessary to arrive at 2:15 – 2:30 to “get their place in line ”  but it works BEST to avoid waiting in line and simply arrive at school between 3:00 – 3:10.  This eliminates parent frustration and traffic problems.

As with morning drop-off, we have two afternoon pick-up points:

Pick-Up Point - In Front of Upper Elementary Building

Our PreK, kindergarten, fourth and fifth graders will be picked up in this area.  Drivers will enter the parking lot from 2nd street.  Refer to the map for more specifics.

Drop Off Point – Along Curb near the Life Church Prayer Chapel

Our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders will use this pick-up point.  Again, please refer to the map for more specifics.  Drivers will enter from road I35 frontage road entrance (near the big cross).

WHAT SHOULD A FAMILY DO WHO HAS CHILDREN IN MORE THAN ONE BUILDING?

We are super protective of our little ones.  Our security is heightened during dismissal time.  Our number one priority is getting children in the PROPER car and doing so safely.  Therefore, we do NOT allow elementary students to leave our building and walk to another building, joining an older sibling.    If our office has been notified, we do allow siblings who are in the 7th – 12th grade to pick up their younger sibling from their carpool line.  We do NOT dismiss our elementary children to older siblings who are in the 6th grade.  We take all of our children to their appropriate pick-up place.  To assist parents who only want to drive through one pick-up line, we allow older siblings to join their younger sibling in the elementary line.  However, the dismissal time for the Middle School and High School is before our elementary dismissal time.  Parents will have time to pick up their older child and then enter the elementary line.

PICKING UP CHILDREN INSIDE THE BUILDING

We respectfully ask parents to follow the pick-up procedures outlined above.  Please do not pick up your child inside the building, outside their classroom.   Teachers teach until the last possible minute.  We need to keep our hallways clear and quiet.
