Yearly Spiritual Emphasis
Each year the elementary schools selects a theme for our chapels and worship. A yearly theme helps connect learning for our students and allows us to build upon precepts previously taught. The theme for 2015-2016 is “Be Like Jesus!” We are emphasizing taking on the likeness of Christ, unity through humility and putting others before ourselves. Philippians 2:1-5
Regular chapel days are Wednesdays in the auditorium of the upper elementary building. Students in grades 3-5 meet for chapel from 8:15 – 9:00; Pre-K-2nd grade students meet from 9:10 – 9:40. Occasionally, we will deviate from meeting for chapel on Wednesday when we have school-wide events such as Grandparents’ Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving chapel, and Easter chapel. Parents and other guests are welcome to join us for chapel. Please sign in at the elementary office and obtain a visitor’s badge before going into the school auditorium. The dress code for students is modified slightly on chapel days. Please see the student handbook for description of Elementary formal dress code.
Biblically Integrated Academics
One of the benefits of attending a Christian school is the opportunity to provide a biblical perspective on all academic content, not just Bible class. Course content in the elementary school is approached on a foundation that God exists and has been actively engaged with His creation since the beginning. Nothing occurs by chance, history is moving in a certain direction, and there is a God-centered answer for the tough questions of life. While the Bible does not address every subject or provide specifics on every topic, the Bible does provide broad theological, ethical, and philosophical principles that can provide the framework for every academic discipline. Teachers at OCS work to ensure that students understand what God has to do with every academic subject.
Daily Bible Class
A distinctive of an OCS education is daily Bible class. Each elementary school student receives daily Bible instruction. Bible is considered a core class in the elementary school. Students receive vertically aligned Bible curriculum that builds on a foundation of Bible knowledge, with age-appropriate application..
