August 2009
Greetings Barnabas Members, Past & Future!

The 2009-2010 (OCS’s 40th anniversary) school year has now started for not only our kids, but also for us parents as well. As we prepare our kids for the academic arena at OCS, let us not forget that they also need to be ready to participate in the many co-curricular activities that OCS has to offer them. But before that can occur, the equipment and other essential items that the different activities require need to be there for them to use. That's where Barnabas Club comes in. In effect, it is a "co-curricular booster club" for those activities.

We are a club organization especially for dads, to help not only the athletic activities but also the many other activities that you see occurring at OCS. With not only your membership dues, but also with your prayers, encouragement and physical labor sometimes, the needs of these different areas are met to help your student achieve their best while they participate in that activity.

As the different activities start to fire-up for the school year, I encourage you guys to become a member of Barnabas Club. Your membership will not only help our kids in their physical and mental development, but also in their spiritual lives as they become future "leaders for Christ". I look forward to meeting with you and communicating regularly this coming year as your club president.

The Barnabas Name:
The Barnabas Club is named after a first century disciple. You'll find his story beginning in Acts 4. He's often mentioned in the book of Acts, and only Paul and Peter are referred to more than Barnabas. Yet people often do not know his given name. His given name was Joseph, but the Christians nicknamed him "Barnabas" because it meant "son of encouragement." Barnabas came alongside people in times of adversity and helped them (e.g. Acts 9:10-28, Acts 15:36-39). The Barnabas Club Member is like this disciple -- a person of encouragement.

Barnabas Mission:
The goal of the Barnabas Club is to equip, edify, encourage, and enrich God's servants through all of our co-curricular activities -- our teachers, sponsors, coaches, students and athletes -- for success on and off the field, court, track and classroom today and in the future.
